TV production and broadcasting

Telewizja Polsat is one of Poland’s two leading private television groups in terms of revenue and share in the TV advertising market. POLSAT, our flagship channel, is one of Poland’s leading channels in terms of audience share, and the market share of our thematic channels has been growing steadily.

Polsat Group’s portfolio currently offers 24 channels (14 in HD standard). Our offer includes entertainment, sports, news, music, lifestyle, movie, and children’s channels.

We have also established one of Poland’s leading advertising sales houses – Polsat Media Biuro Reklamy, which sells advertising airtime.

Market environment

Poland’s television station market comprises public and commercial broadcasters transmitting programmes of nationwide and regional coverage. A significant number of channels are available on a pay-to-view basis (through cable and DTH platforms), with 27 terrestrial digital TV channels available on a free-to-air basis.

The entry barrier for new players is rather difficult to overcome in a short time. To obtain a license, broadcasters must comply with licensing requirements concerning their corporate ownership structures, as well as the content of their channels, which is regulated by law. In addition, substantial expenditure is required from prospective broadcasters in order to ensure the necessary infrastructure, purchase a library of content, secure proper distribution of programmes and assemble a professional team responsible for sales of advertising airtime.

Polish TV advertising market

In 2016, TV was the dominant advertising medium in Poland with 52% share in the total advertising expenditure. According to Zenith forecasts, this share is expected to remain stable in upcoming years with a slight downward tendency. The significant increase of the share of Internet as an advertising medium does not influence television’s position in a substantial way, due to the decline of advertising expenditures in printed press.

Advertising expenditure by medium from 2011 to 2018

The Polish TV ad market is characterized by a high level of TV consumption. In 2016 the average daily TV viewing time among the surveyed population remained at a very high level, estimated at 262 minutes. Considering such a high average TV viewing time, it is justified to assume that the TV market will continue to be an attractive communications platform for advertisers.

Key TV stations

The Polish TV market remains dominated by the four largest terrestrial channels: TVP1, TVP2, TVN and POLSAT, which collectively had 41.1% of the aggregate audience share in the commercial group in 2016. In 2016, further significant fragmentation of the TV market was observed. The importance of smaller broadcasters available on the multiplexes was growing, mainly at the expense of the abovementioned four largest TV channels available earlier in analogue terrestrial television.

In 2016, our main channel POLSAT had an all-day audience share of 13.23%, which was the best result on the market. Average annual technical coverage was 99.9%. Our thematic channels had an 11.6% combined audience share.

In 2016, POLSAT’s main competitor, TVN achieved a 12.75% all-day audience share and had 99.9% average annual technical coverage. TVP Group broadcasts 12 channels, including TVP1 and TVP2, and is one of the main players on the Polish TV advertising market. In 2016, the main channels of TVP Group had 7.4% (TVP1) and 7.2% (TVP2) all-day audience shares. The technical reach of both channels reaches 99.9% of TV households in Poland. TVP’s thematic channels had 7.6% audience share.

Digital terrestrial TV (DTT)

On July 23, 2013, Poland’s switch-over from analogue TV broadcasting to the Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard was completed. Currently, digital television is offered in Poland within four free multiplexes and one pay multiplex dedicated for TV reception on mobile devices. It is expected that the process of digitalization in Poland may involve six multiplexes. The DTT multiplexes offer free access to 27 channels and cover 99% of the country.

In addition to nationwide multiplexes, channels can be broadcast through local multiplexes. Currently, five such multiplexes have been activated.

Advertising and sponsorship

Telewizja Polsat offers the sale of commercial spots and sponsorship of advertising programmes.

Advertising airtime is sold through the sale of Gross Rating Points (GRPs) or based on advertising price lists for a given month. GRP prices are set each month by the Polsat Media advertising office for the respective channels or groups of channels. The advertising sales house offers the price for the provision of the contractually agreed audience in the case of GRP block contracts. The price list-based sale follows the advertising prices published by Polsat Media on a monthly basis. Advertisers select advertising breaks based on their judgement of which programmes best correspond with the group they want to target with the advertising message.

In sponsorship advertising, sponsor boards are presented during previews, before and after the sponsored programme, and during commercial breaks in the course of sponsored programmes. Sponsoring projects are sold all year long and are tailor-made in cooperation with customers. Prices and discounts are negotiated on a case-by-case basis for each customer and are custom-fitted to each sponsoring campaign.

The sales of all advertising formats on Telewizja Polsat’s channels are handled by the Polsat Media advertising sales house, a Group company.

Technology and infrastructure

Broadcasting of TV channels

We broadcast TV channels over the digital terrestrial TV, cable networks and digital satellite platforms. Analogue terrestrial broadcasting was finally switched off on July 23, 2013.

POLSAT, our main channel, and channels Super Polsat, TV4 and TV6 are broadcast via the nation-wide network of digital terrestrial transmitters within the MUX-2 operated by Emitel Sp. z o.o.(unrelated entity). We have agreements with Emitel for transmission, up-linking, multiplexing and monitoring of the four mentioned channels in digital network. The remaining channels of Telewizja POLSAT are broadcast exclusively via digital satellite platforms and cable TV networks.

We have an agreement with Eutelsat S.A. in place for the use of satellite transponders, enabling us to broadcast over digital satellite platforms.

Technology and infrastructure

As the leading commercial broadcaster and producer of TV content, TV Polsat uses state-of-the-art technologies and relies on latest equipment. The main picture format is the High Definition 1080i50 standard. Since 2013 production and broadcasting has been based on electronic circulation of materials, which effectively speeds up and simplifies editing and transfer of materials, as compared to materials recorded on tape and concurrently offers additional possibilities of expoitation of the materials, such as VOD or on mobile devices.
